The Last Message Before the Highway

I left you

everything I couldn't fit
inside my car.

Food
in the cupboards.

Dishes
in the sink.

Cooking utensils
still on their way.

The website
you and my dad watched movies on.

Boxes
for someone else to collect.

My keys
locked inside.

I even left you

the words

“I love you.”

Because they were still true.

I didn't slam the door.

I didn't break the windows.

I didn't curse your name.

I drove away

wondering

if kindness
would be the last thing
you remembered me by.

You answered
with reasons
why I wasn't enough.

I answered
with directions
to the spare dishes.

Because even while
my heart was breaking,

I was still trying

to make sure

you'd have dinner.
