You became fluent
in apologies.
Each one
carefully wrapped,
gently spoken,
beautifully timed.
But apologies
without change
are only echoes.
Pretty sounds
inside empty rooms.
You kept saying
“I’ll do better.”
While doing
exactly
what you always did.
Eventually,
I stopped listening
to your words
and started believing
your actions.
They had been telling me
the truth
all along.
