Every Time She Said Sister

“Sister,” Gabby would say.

And every time,
Beaner turned.

Not because someone told her to.

Not because she had to.

But because somewhere
inside her heart,
she knew
that word belonged to her.

Again.

“Sister.”

Another smile.

Another glance.

A conversation
that needed no sentences,
only recognition.

The world spends so much time
measuring children
by the words they say.

But today,
love answered
without speaking at all.
