There are stories
about rescuing animals.
About finding them
cold,
hungry,
alone.
But nobody talks
about the moment
they rescue you.
The first time
a tiny heartbeat
decides
your chest
is safer
than the world.
The first time
a kitten
falls asleep
with her face
against your hand,
as though
she has never questioned
where she belongs.
She doesn’t know
my history.
She doesn’t know
the names
that still ache.
The children
I wait for.
The grief
that still visits.
She knows only this:
My hands are gentle.
My heartbeat
is steady.
My shirt
smells like home.
So she closes her eyes.
She purrs.
She trusts me
with the whole
of her tiny life.
People think
I saved a kitten.
Maybe I did.
But every night
she curls against me,
kneads the place
above my heart,
and reminds me
that love
doesn’t always arrive
asking to be understood.
Sometimes
it simply arrives,
looks at you
with sleepy eyes,
and chooses you
without ever asking
who you used to be. 💛🐾
