You were looking
for milk.
Instead,
you found a heartbeat.
You tucked your tiny head
beneath my chin,
searched the folds of my shirt,
and purred
as though you’d discovered
something worth keeping.
Maybe you had.
The world is still so big to you.
Doors.
Dogs.
Strange rooms.
Loud footsteps.
Windows taller than your dreams.
Yet somehow,
you decided
my heartbeat
was louder
than all of them.
You knead the fabric
above my chest,
certain that comfort
can be stitched
into cotton.
You don’t know
that every time
your little engine starts,
it quiets
something inside me too.
You came here
looking for warmth.
I think we both found it.
Tonight,
there is a kitten
sleeping against my heart,
certain
that people
can be home.
And maybe—
just maybe—
she’s teaching me
that they can. 💛
